Madrid is a city full of history, culture, and life.
If you’re planning to study in Spain or just visit the capital, there are some must-see places you simply can’t miss. In this article, we’ll tell you about the 5 most important monuments in Madrid so you don’t leave without seeing them.

1. Royal Palace of Madrid

The Royal Palace of Madrid is the official residence of the King of Spain, although it is now only used for official ceremonies. It’s the largest royal palace in Western Europe, with over 3,000 rooms. You can visit the interior and explore impressive spaces like the Throne Room and the Royal Armoury.

Tip: If you’re a student, you can get a reduced ticket. Also, admission is free on Wednesdays for EU citizens.

2. Puerta de Alcalá

This grand triumphal arch stands in the iconic Plaza de la Independencia. It was commissioned by King Charles III in the 18th century and is one of the most photographed landmarks in Madrid. The Puerta de Alcalá is a perfect starting point for a stroll through Retiro Park.

Fun fact: There’s a famous song by Ana Belén and Víctor Manuel named after it.

3. Temple of Debod

The Temple of Debod is one of the most unique places in the city. This ancient Egyptian temple was a gift from Egypt to Spain in 1968, and it’s located right in the city center, near Plaza de España. It’s an ideal spot to relax and watch the sunset surrounded by ancient history.

Recommendation: Go in the evening to enjoy one of the best sunsets in Madrid.

4. Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor is the historic heart of Madrid. Surrounded by arcades and buildings with painted facades, this square has hosted coronations, markets, and popular festivals since the 17th century. Today, it’s a great place to sit at a terrace café or try the classic fried calamari sandwich.

Tip: Don’t miss the nearby San Miguel Market—just a short walk away.
